Installing Your Wood Floor

Wood flooring installations can be a seamless process when proper recommendations are followed. One essential step is ensuring the flooring is acclimatised to the room where it will be installed. Each type of wood flooring requires tailored guidance, as factors like the chosen material and environmental conditions can affect the process.

Why Acclimatisation Matters

For solid wood flooring, acclimatisation is essential because these floors naturally expand and contract with temperature changes. Factors like central heating or seasonal weather shifts can cause significant movement. In extreme cases, improper installation or acclimatisation has even led to walls being displaced by expanding wood floors.

Trust Professional Wood Flooring Fitters

To ensure a flawless finish and prevent such issues, we highly recommend using professional wood flooring fitters with years of expertise. Our team is committed to delivering exceptional results, monitored for quality, customer satisfaction, and professionalism.

Installation duration depends on several factors:

  • Room size: Larger rooms take more time to complete.
  • Type of flooring: Solid wood may take longer due to more intricate installation methods, while engineered wood can be quicker, especially with click-fit systems.
  • Preparation: If the subfloor needs leveling or other prep work, this adds extra time.
  • Finishing: If sanding and finishing are required, this can extend the process by a day or more.

Each project is different, but these timelines offer a general estimate.

Solid hardwood: No underlay needed for nail-down or glue-down installations.

Engineered hardwood (floating): Underlay is recommended for added protection and comfort.

Wood flooring can be glued down, but it depends on the type of wood and installation method:

  • Solid hardwood is often nailed or stapled, but can also be glued, especially for concrete subfloors.
  • Engineered wood is frequently glued down, particularly in areas with high moisture levels or when installed over concrete, as it provides better stability.

Gluing offers strong adhesion, reducing movement and noise, but it’s permanent and harder to repair compared to floating installations. It’s ideal for engineered wood or areas where extra stability is needed.

Whether to nail or float an engineered wood floor depends on your specific needs:

  • Nailing provides more stability and is ideal for wood subfloors. It’s permanent and prevents movement but requires more skill and tools.

  • Floating is easier to install and is better for concrete subfloors or areas with moisture concerns. It allows the floor to expand and contract naturally, and is quicker to repair or replace.

For DIY projects, floating is often preferred, while nailing is suitable for a more traditional, secure installation.

The thickness of wood flooring typically varies depending on the type and application:

  1. Solid Hardwood Flooring: Usually ranges from 18mm to 25mm (3/4 inch to 1 inch). Thicker boards provide more durability and can be sanded and refinished multiple times.

  2. Engineered Wood Flooring: Commonly available in thicknesses of 10mm to 20mm (3/8 inch to 3/4 inch). Thicker engineered boards offer better stability and can handle changes in humidity and temperature more effectively.

When choosing thickness, consider the subfloor type, the expected foot traffic, and whether you plan to refinish the floor in the future. Thicker options generally provide better longevity and performance.
