Wood Floor Sanding Taunton Project Brief
At the start of a new week, we took on another rewarding restoration project, breathing new life into an attic room with wood floor sanding Taunton. The 25sqm attic space featured old tongue-and-groove pine flooring, which had suffered from years of wear and previous careless plumbing work. Several boards had been damaged and required careful repair before the sanding process could begin. The goal was to restore the floor, level it, and apply a protective finish that would enhance the natural beauty of the wood while ensuring durability.
Wood Floor Sanding Taunton Client Expectations
Our client had a clear vision for this project, with the following key expectations:
- Repair the damaged sections where boards had been pulled up or split.
- Ensure a smooth, level finish that highlights the natural pine grain.
- Fill the gaps effectively to prevent drafts and enhance the aesthetic.
- Apply a warm, natural colour that softens the bright pine tone.
- Protect the restored floor with a durable, matte lacquer finish.
Wood Floor Sanding Taunton Process
Repairs and Preparation
The first challenge was addressing the damaged floorboards caused by past plumbing work. Several boards had been removed improperly, leaving rough, uneven edges.
Each affected board was removed and re-cut to create clean, square edges.
New sections were carefully cut to size and securely fitted in place.
This ensured a seamless, professional finish before beginning the sanding process.
Before sanding, we faced an additional challenge: access to the attic space. The room was located four flights of stairs up, meaning all equipment had to be manually carried upstairs. This included:
Hummel sanding machine (engine and body), Edger, Flexisand machine, Hoover, Various sandpapers and tools
Transporting the equipment alone took 45 minutes, making the sanding process feel like a well-earned break!
Sanding the Floor
With the repairs complete, we began the wood floor sanding Taunton process:
The first sanding pass was done with 40-grit sandpaper using the Hummel machine.
The edges were carefully sanded with the edger machine, ensuring a smooth transition between sections.
The floor responded well, revealing the light, natural pine beneath years of dirt and wear.
Once level, all gaps were filled using a special mastic filler, which remains flexible to prevent cracking over time.
The filler dried in just 20 minutes, allowing for 80 and 120-grit sanding runs to refine the surface.
Excess filler was removed, ensuring a perfectly smooth and even finish.
Final Sanding and Colour Application
The next day, we returned to complete the finishing touches:
All corners were carefully scraped and hand-sanded to ensure a flawless result.
A final flexi-sanding pass with 120-grit was performed, leaving an incredibly smooth surface.
Our client selected Victorian pine as the stain, a popular choice for softening the bright tones of fresh pine without darkening it excessively.
The stain was applied evenly, helping blend in the natural variations of the wood grain and the darker filler between the boards.
Protective Lacquer Application
Once the stain had dried, we applied two coats of matte lacquer:
The first coat was applied carefully to seal the surface and enhance durability.
Once dry, the grain was lightly buffed to ensure an ultra-smooth finish.
The second coat provided an even, protective layer that would keep the floor looking beautiful for years to come.
Wood Floor Sanding Taunton Final Result
The transformation was remarkable. The once worn and damaged attic floor now looked pristine, showcasing the natural character of the wood with a beautifully blended, warm Victorian pine tone. The matte lacquer finish ensured:
A durable and easy-to-maintain surface.
A natural, elegant appearance that didn’t overpower the space.
A seamless restoration, where previous damage was completely unnoticeable.
