Wood Floor Restoration Yeovil: Bathroom Floor Restoration

Wood Floor Restoration Yeovil Project Brief

This wood floor restoration Yeovil project took place in a charming period property where our clients were renovating two upstairs bathrooms. Each room measured approximately 6 square metres and featured original pine floorboards that had suffered years of wear.

The aim was to bring the floors back to life while making them water-resistant and visually appealing. The homeowners had a clear vision: restore the pine floors, seal all the gaps between the boards, and finish them in a rich walnut stain.

As bathroom flooring has the added challenge of moisture exposure, it was important that both functionality and aesthetic appeal were carefully balanced. This project required an expert approach to both floor sanding and gap sealing.

Wood Floor Restoration Yeovil Client Expectations

Our client was specific in their brief. They wanted:

  • A full restoration of their pine floors through professional wood floor restoration Yeovil services
  • All visible gaps sealed to improve water resistance
  • A dark walnut stain to enhance the period charm of the home
  • A hard-wearing, protective lacquer finish suitable for bathrooms

Efficiency and cleanliness were also important due to the fact that the work was being carried out inside their living space. With that in mind, all work was completed over two days to minimise disruption.

Wood Floor Restoration Yeovil Process

Day One: Initial Sanding and Gap Filling

Given the small size of each room and their upstairs location, it was impractical to bring in a large drum sander. Instead, I used a powerful edge sander across the entire floor. Although typically used for perimeter work, the edger is more than capable of sanding full rooms when used methodically. I started with a 60-grit paper, which efficiently removed old varnish and surface damage while levelling the boards.

Once the floors were clean and even, I turned my focus to the gaps between the floorboards. In any wood floor restoration Yeovil project involving bathrooms, sealing these gaps is essential.

I used a moisture-resistant mastic designed to flex with the wood and withstand both sanding and lacquering. After the first coat cured, I returned to apply a second layer to overfill any areas where the filler had sunk—ensuring a perfectly flush and watertight surface. With that complete, the first day was wrapped up to allow everything to set overnight.

Day Two: Refinement, Staining and Lacquering

The second day began with a round of finer sanding. I ran 80-grit and 120-grit paper with the edger to smooth the floors further and remove any filler residue. The corners were scraped and detailed using a corner machine, and the perimeter was treated to an extra pass with a palm sander for precision.

For the body of the floors, I used a FlexiSand machine with 100-grit and 120-grit abrasives to ensure a consistent, smooth finish. At this stage, both floors were ready for colour.

The chosen walnut stain was applied carefully and then wiped back to allow the natural grain of the pine to shine through while creating a warm, dark aesthetic. Once the stain dried, I began the lacquering process.

In this wood floor restoration Yeovil project, durability and water resistance were key. I applied three coats of matt lacquer, allowing each layer to dry fully before applying the next. Thanks to the warm weather, drying times were quick, allowing the process to stay on schedule. While the first coat dried, I loaded up all the sanding and finishing equipment to ensure a clean workspace.

Final Result

The results of this wood floor restoration Yeovil bathroom project were impressive. The original pine floorboards, once tired and hidden beneath years of wear, were transformed into smooth, dark walnut masterpieces. The seamless gap filling ensured not only a more attractive finish but also made the floor better suited to wet environments.

The deep walnut stain added warmth and sophistication to both rooms, while the triple coat of matt lacquer provided a water-resistant barrier—ideal for bathrooms. The meticulous preparation and methodical sanding ensured the floors were smooth underfoot and visually stunning.
