Sports Hall Floor Installation Nailsea Project Brief
This sports hall floor installation project took place in a large 600sqm hall in Nailsea. Our client previously had a point elastic surface that had become worn and was no longer suitable for the demands of modern sports activities. They opted for a high-performance sprung sports floor, which provides area elasticity, offering better impact absorption and bounce compared to a point elastic floor.
The goal was to install a durable, professional-grade sports floor that would enhance performance, withstand heavy use, and accommodate multiple sports. The project also included line markings for basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton courts.
Client Expectations
Our client’s expectations were clear:
- Replace the existing worn surface with a top-quality sprung sports floor system.
- Ensure the installation met professional standards, including a durable subfloor and a flexible, easy-to-maintain top layer.
- Provide accurate, clearly defined line markings for multiple sports courts.
- Complete the installation efficiently to minimise downtime for the hall’s activities.
Sports Hall Floor Installation Process
Preparation and Leveling
Unlike many projects, there was no need to remove an old floor, saving time and effort. However, we had to level several small uneven areas to ensure a solid foundation for the new system. Once levelled, the surface was cleaned thoroughly to prepare for the next steps.
Damp Proof Membrane (DPM)
A sheet damp proof membrane was laid across the entire hall, with special attention to tightly sealing all the joins. The DPM extended slightly up the walls to create a complete moisture barrier, protecting the subfloor and ensuring the longevity of the new sports floor.
Sports Hall Floor Installation Subfloor Construction
The subfloor construction began with the installation of sports-grade foam sheets, laid tightly together to minimise movement. A sheet of film was then placed over the foam to keep the layers stable during the rest of the installation.
Next, a full layer of specialised sports-grade plywood was laid over the foam. The sheets were locked and glued in place to create a seamless, sturdy subfloor. This provided a solid, reliable base for the final surface while maintaining the essential bounce and impact absorption properties of a sprung sports floor.
Sports Surface Installation
The chosen top surface for this project was blue sports linoleum, a durable and flexible material that is easy to clean and maintain. Due to its weight, handling and installing the linoleum required specialised equipment and expertise.
The linoleum was cut and glued down to the plywood subfloor, with meticulous care to avoid adhesive spills on the surface. Once all the sheets were laid, each seam was carefully scribed, cut, and welded to create a smooth, seamless finish.
Sports Hall Floor Line Marking
With the floor installed, the next step was to apply line markings for basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton courts. Precision was critical, as these markings needed to be square, centered, and professionally aligned with the hall.
Taping and painting were completed one court at a time to ensure accuracy. The vibrant court lines stood out beautifully against the blue linoleum, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.
Final Touches
The final stage involved installing skirting, thresholds, and sockets, ensuring all edges and transitions were clean and professional. The floor was then deep-cleaned to remove any residue from the installation process, leaving it ready for use.
Sports Hall Floor Installation Final Result
The completed sports hall floor was a remarkable transformation. The new sprung system provided superior performance with excellent bounce and impact absorption, meeting the demands of high-traffic sports activities. The blue linoleum surface was not only visually striking but also practical, offering durability and easy maintenance.
The precision-applied court markings added functionality and ensured the hall could accommodate multiple sports. Our client was delighted with the finished floor, which significantly improved the performance and usability of the space.
