Pine Parquet Restoration Crediton Case Study
Pine Parquet Restoration Crediton Project Brief
This week, we had the opportunity to work on a Pine Parquet restoration project in Crediton. Unlike traditional herringbone patterns, this parquet flooring featured a bespoke double herringbone design, adding unique character to the space.
The floor, covering an area of 25 square meters, was significantly worn, with an orange hue and noticeable scratches. Our goal was to level the floor, lighten its appearance, and apply a silk lacquer finish that would endure the strains of daily family life.
Project Scope and Client Expectations
Our client wanted us to restore the pine parquet floor by removing the orange tint, leveling it, and applying a durable lacquer finish. The main requirements were:
- Lighten the wood to reveal the natural color of the pine, eliminating the existing orange tone.
- Level the flooring to ensure a smooth, consistent surface across the entire area, especially in the challenging hallway sections.
- Apply a silk lacquer finish that would withstand everyday use in a busy household, including resistance to UV rays and protection from dirt and wear.
Our client was particularly concerned with ensuring the finish was long-lasting, as the space was frequently used by the family. They wanted a natural, brightened look that would retain its quality over time without turning orange or accumulating dirt in the grain.
Pine Parquet Restoration Crediton Process
Initial Sanding
We began by sanding the floor using 60-grit sandpaper. Pine is a relatively soft wood, and the existing varnish was of low quality, making it easier to remove. The sanding process started to reveal the natural beauty of the pine almost immediately, and the client was thrilled to see the transformation. The true colour of the Pine parquet began to emerge, significantly lightening the overall appearance of the floor.
Addressing Challenges in the Hallway
One of the challenges we faced was the hallway, which had an awkward shape that made it difficult to manoeuvre the sanding equipment effectively. To tackle this, we used an edger—a smaller, more versatile sanding machine—ideal for tight spaces.
The edger allowed us to sand the intricate areas thoroughly, though it required a lot of physical effort due to the tight angles and the need for precision. Despite these challenges, we managed to achieve a consistent finish throughout the hallway.
Fine Sanding and Detailing
Once the initial sanding was complete, we continued with finer sanding grits—80 and 120—to smooth the surface and prepare it for finishing. We used the edger and then followed up with a palm sander for any difficult areas, ensuring an even texture across the entire floor.
Finally, we used a flexi sander to make sure the parquet pattern was perfectly prepared for the lacquer application. The sanding process not only removed the old varnish but also levelled the floor, eliminating scratches and imperfections, and highlighting the intricate double herringbone design.
First Lacquer Application and Door Bar Installation
After completing the sanding process, we applied the first coat of clear matte lacquer. This initial coat was essential for sealing the pine and providing a base layer for the subsequent finish.
While waiting for the lacquer to dry, we installed a door bar in the transition area between the hallway and the living room. There was a large, unsightly gap that needed covering, and we used an oak door bar to address this. Although the door bar was oak rather than pine, it blended in well, and the client was pleased with the overall look.
Final Lacquer Coats
Once the first coat of lacquer had dried, we buffed the floor to ensure a smooth surface and applied two additional coats of silk lacquer. This multi-coat process provided a thick, uniform finish that not only enhanced the natural beauty of the pine but also offered robust protection against wear and tear.
The silk lacquer finish gave the floor a subtle sheen, highlighting the unique grain patterns of the pine without being overly glossy.
Pine Parquet Restoration Crediton Challenges and Solutions
The primary challenge of this project was navigating the awkward hallway space, which required precision sanding to achieve a uniform finish. The use of the edger allowed us to overcome this challenge, though it was labor-intensive.
Another challenge was the installation of the door bar, which needed to seamlessly bridge the transition between the hallway and the living room while covering an existing gap. By using an oak door bar, we were able to create a functional yet visually pleasing solution.
Additionally, our client’s requirement for a long-lasting finish meant that we had to be meticulous in our selection of lacquer. We opted for a high-quality UV-protective lacquer to prevent the pine from developing an orange hue over time, which is a common issue with softer woods like pine. This also ensured that dirt would not penetrate the grain, keeping the floor looking fresh for years to come.
Pine Parquet Restoration Crediton Result
The pine parquet restoration in Crediton was a resounding success. The transformation from a worn, orange-tinted floor to a beautifully restored, lightened pine parquet was dramatic. The final silk lacquer finish provided a refined, elegant appearance that perfectly suited the family’s needs—durable enough to withstand daily use, yet visually striking.
The unique double herringbone pattern was brought back to life, with the grain of the pine beautifully highlighted.
The UV-protective lacquer will ensure that the floor maintains its colour without fading or darkening, and the multiple coats provide a level of durability that will protect against scratches and wear.
Our client was extremely pleased with the outcome, particularly with how the natural beauty of the pine was enhanced without the yellowing effect that often occurs with cheaper finishes. The door bar installation also contributed to a more polished look, effectively bridging the two areas of the home.
