Pine Floor Sanding Yeovil

Pine Floor Sanding Yeovil Case Study

Project Overview

This pine floor sanding project was a new age pine flooring (tongue & groove flooring) as opposed to the usual original pine floor boards that we restore regularly. The client had removed all the carpets and we could see the potential of the pine flooring was good. The aim was to sand and create a light natural finish.

The area was a 20sqm lounge & 50sqm area upstairs.

Client Expectations

Our client didn’t have high expectations, but they knew they didn’t want carpet and they were after something that would be easy to maintain and they were after something natural and light.

Pine Floor Sanding Process

  • Downstairs Floor Sanding

I started sanding the downstairs lounge on a 40grit sand paper on a belt sander, this pine floor appeared to be an easy sand; however the floor was very unlevel. I had to sand against the grain first, which you’re not meant to do because you can get marks showing against the grain. Which gives a slashed effect, so when you sand with the grain again you must go slow and careful. That’s what I did and then progressed through the higher grits a lot faster.

Pine Floor Restoration

Once the pine floor had been base sanded, finished on 120 grit, I moved on to the edging machine to sand down all the edges of the floor, this was decidedly easier to tackle the unevenness with an edger machine because it’s a spinning disc as opposed to the belt sander.

All the corners were also scrapped and sanded, before a palm sander blended all the edging marks and a final pass with the flexi sand on 100/120 run.

Pine Floor Transformation

A sample of saicos lacquer was put down and allowed to dry to ensure the client was happy with the colour, which she was and so 3 coats of Matt lacquer was applied, knocking back the grain after the first coat.

  • Upstairs Floor Sanding
Whilst the downstairs floor was drying, by 3pm, I took all my equipment upstairs and set up for the next day. Made sure all the sawdust was out the property and I left my working area tidy as my clients  still need to live in their house whilst work was carried out.

The following day I was hoping the floor upstairs was more level, to my delight it was. So, the first 40grit run was a lot quicker & easier. However, the upstairs was made up of 3 bedrooms and a hallway, so lot more corners and edge sanding to do.

I always sand the floors with Hummel first to 120 grit & then start the edging through 40-120grit, this way it is methodical, and I know no areas will be missed or lower grots won’t be missed by high grit passes.

After all the final edging and palm sander passed were completed there were several chipped boards that needed my attention; I didn’t want to replace the boards as that would stick out, so I mixed a sawdust and resin mix and then repaired edges of the boards, after which I sanded it down to try and patch the boards as much as possible.

After the repairs and final flexi sand passes were complete upstairs, everything was hoovered, and 3 coats of Matt lacquer were applied and buffed back after first coat to ensure a smooth finish and whilst I was waiting for the lacquers to dry I sanded back a banister for the client and finished in the same lacquer as the floor to create a nice finish to the upstairs area.

Pine Floor Sanding Yeovil Challenges and result

The challenge with the downstairs area was that the floor was unlevelled and upstairs area was of many different small areas, but as I explained above with careful planning and consideration the end result was achieved and our client was very happy with the results.

Client Testimonial

James did a great job sanding and lacquering our landing, stairs and hallway. He’s a very tidy and courteous worker. You can tell he has a lot of experience and knowledge in his field. Would highly recommend.
