Pine Floor Sanding Southville Project Brief
This pine floor sanding Southville project involved restoring the original Victorian floorboards in a home located in one of Bristol’s historic neighborhoods. With Southville’s abundance of Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian properties, preserving original wood flooring is a great way to maintain the charm and character of these period homes.
The project included the sanding and finishing of a living room, front room, and hallway. Since the gaps between the boards had already been insulated with draft excluders, no gap filling was required. Our client opted for a natural matt lacquer finish, ensuring a durable and low-maintenance result.
Pine Floor Sanding Southville Client Expectations
Our client had specific expectations for this project:
Enhance the natural beauty of the Victorian pine floorboards.
Ensure a smooth, even surface while preserving the original character.
Apply a protective, long-lasting matt lacquer finish for easy maintenance.
Minimise disruption with a swift and efficient sanding and finishing process.
Keep the work area clean and avoid any damage to surrounding features like the hearth and skirting.
Pine Floor Sanding Southville Process
Sanding the Floor
The first step was to sand the entire area, starting with 40-grit sandpaper to remove ingrained dirt, old finishes, and surface imperfections.
A progressive sanding process followed, moving up to 80 and 120-grit on the main floor area.
The edges were carefully sanded using 80/120-grit paper, ensuring the floorboards were smooth without damaging surrounding features like the hearth.
Special attention was given to maintaining the integrity of the floorboards while achieving a uniform, clean surface.
Flexi-Sanding and Preparation for Finishing
Once the main sanding was completed, the floor underwent a flexi-sanding process using 100 and 120-grit sandpaper to remove any remaining sanding marks. This final pass ensured that the floor was as smooth as possible before applying the finish.
The floor was then thoroughly hoovered to remove any remaining dust, ensuring a flawless lacquer application.
Applying the Matt Lacquer Finish
Our client selected a natural matt lacquer, which provides a protective finish while preserving the raw beauty of the wood.
The first coat of water-based matt lacquer was applied methodically, one board at a time, straight from a tray.
This process was relaxing and efficient, requiring less labor than oil-based finishes.
While the first coat dried, the van was loaded up—made easier by securing a rare parking spot outside the house.
Once the first coat had dried, the floor was lightly knocked back to reduce grain raising, vacuumed again, and a second, thicker coat of lacquer was applied for enhanced durability.
Pine Floor Sanding Southville Final Result
The pine floor sanding Southville project transformed worn, dirt-engrained, hard-to-maintain flooring into a smooth, fresh, and easy-to-maintain surface.
The original Victorian floorboards were beautifully restored, enhancing the character of the home.
The matt lacquer finish provided a natural look while offering long-lasting protection.
The work was completed efficiently, with the entire process finished by 2 PM.
Our client was extremely pleased with the result and has already planned to have the living room and hallway floors restored at a later stage.
