Pine Floor Sanding Clevedon Project Brief
This pine floor sanding Clevedon project involved restoring an original pine floor in a bedroom of a period property. The floor had previously been hidden under carpets and, over the years, had accumulated screws, nails, and visible damage. The goal was to carry out a full pine floor sanding Clevedon service—removing any surface damage, filling gaps and imperfections, and finishing with a high-quality natural matt lacquer. This bedroom was the first stage, with plans to restore additional rooms in the future.
Pine Floor Sanding Clevedon Client Expectations
Our client had recently redecorated parts of the house, including laying new carpets in the hallway. They wanted to bring the old pine floors back to life, starting with one bedroom, with a hope to create a warm, natural look that complemented the house’s character.
Their key priorities for the pine floor sanding Clevedon job were:
- To have the pine floor professionally sanded, free of imperfections.
- Fill gaps, nail holes, and previous screw marks, making the surface uniform.
- Apply a durable, natural matte lacquer that would be hard-wearing and easy to maintain.
- Protect existing carpets from any accidental damage during the process.
We assured them that with our careful, methodical process and high-end finishes, their expectations would be met—and exceeded.
Pine Floor Sanding Clevedon Process
The pine floor sanding Clevedon restoration process started with meticulous preparation. As with all old pine floor restoration projects, this stage is essential to ensure a flawless result.
Initial Preparation
- The first step was to remove all old screws and punch down any nails sticking out above the surface.
- Any damaged boards were repaired, ensuring stability before sanding began.
- We protected the newly laid carpets in the adjacent hallway, removing shoes before entering and applying extra caution around doorways to avoid any contact with adhesives or dust.
Sanding and Gap Filling
- The first sanding pass was completed with a 40-grit belt, leveling the floorboards and providing a clean canvas for gap filling.
- We then glued in pine fillets using an expanding polyurethane adhesive. Each fillet was carefully knocked into place and allowed to set before trimming the excess.
- To ensure no risk of adhesive spreading onto the carpets or hallway, we allowed extra drying time and carefully monitored the working area.
Once the fillets were secure, we conducted a second 40-grit sanding to level them with the surrounding floorboards.
Fine Filling and Finishing Sanding
- A fine sawdust and resin mix was applied with a trowel to fill any small gaps, nail holes, and imperfections. We used reclaimed pine dust from a previous job to ensure a consistent colour match.
- After allowing sufficient drying time, we sanded the entire floor up through the finer grits—80 and then 120 grit—leaving the floor smooth and uniform.
The floor was then flexi-sanded on 120 grit, ensuring the surface was ready for finishing.
Finishing with Matte Lacquer
- After a thorough hoovering to remove all dust, we applied the first coat of natural matt lacquer using a roller and paintbrush. Working methodically out of the room ensured an even application.
- A second coat of lacquer was applied after drying, but I noticed a patchy appearance—a rare occurrence but something that needs addressing before completion.
- Despite having already packed the van, I re-abraded the entire floor to smooth out the grain, hoovered thoroughly, and applied a third coat of Morrells Induro XL2, a high-build, two-component lacquer known for its durability and hard-wearing finish.
This additional coat corrected the unevenness and provided a stunning, consistent matt finish.
Pine Floor Sanding Clevedon Final Result
The final result of this pine floor sanding Clevedon project was an elegantly restored pine floor with a warm, natural appearance. The grain of the pine was beautifully enhanced by the matte lacquer finish, and the colour and texture were consistent throughout the room.
The filled gaps and repaired areas blended seamlessly with the original boards, giving the floor a cohesive, refreshed look. The Morrells Induro XL2 lacquer provided a tough, durable finish that will protect the floor for years to come.
Our client was incredibly pleased with the transformation and impressed with the care taken to protect other areas of the home, particularly the newly installed hallway carpet. We look forward to returning to complete the remaining rooms of the house in future stages of this pine floor sanding Clevedon project.
