Pine Floor Restoration Portishead

Pine Floor Restoration Portishead Case Study

Project Overview

This Pine floor restoration project was a combination of new tongue & groove pine flooring and old original pine boards. This floor had been treated with varnish many years ago and has since been darkened from UV light and dirt.

The total sqm was around 45sqm but located in 4 different areas. The utility room, the breakfast room, hallway & dining room, meaning that there were lots of corners and ends to finish.

Client Expectations

Our client asked for a fresh, bright colour that wasn’t too orange but still light.

This hasn’t been easy as the pine flooring on this job was very orange.

Pine Floor Restoration Process

On the first day all the areas were prepped – sanded throughout course, medium and fine sanding stages on all machines (Hummel, edging machine, corner machine)

The sanding was easy on this job but what took the majority of time was all the corners, for a 45sqm areas & 4 rooms, there must of been 60 corners to restore….

I use a special festool corner machine, even with this it took a while! Doesn’t matter how good the body of the floor looks if the corners stick out like a soar thumb.

The client and I then choose an area to apply the colour samples. We tried 6/7 colours and none of them hit the mark, it was tricky as no dark colours were wanted, and the light colours were showing the orange of the pine underneath.  As a final attempt, I mixed some lacquer with some wood dye, creating a tinted lacquer, which created the colour that our client asked for and was happy with.

On the second day on this  restoration project final preparations were done.

With the samples from the previous day sanded off, hoovering and final passes with the flexi sand on 120grit complete, the tinted lacquer was applied one board at a time, with the grain… Being very diligent not to get any tinted lacquer on the skirting, I have applied two coats.

Pine flooring stained and lacquered

With a coloured lacquer you must make sure every inch is covered and work it into the wood flooring.

On the newer tongue and groove pine flooring the colour did look lighter than the old pine boards. No matter what you do there is always going to be a difference that only time will match.

After the lacquer dried, the grain was knocked back to create a smooth finish and I then applied a final third clear coat of Matt finish.
