Oak Plank Flooring Taunton: A Supply and Fit Case Study

Oak Plank Flooring Taunton Project Brief

This Oak Plank Flooring Taunton project involved transforming an 85sqm, two-story home in Cotford St. Luke near Taunton. A lovely couple, newly moved into the property, wanted to replace the carpets throughout with engineered oak plank flooring. Their main concern was ease of maintenance, as they found carpets difficult to clean and prone to trapping dust and allergens.

Following a site visit to showcase samples and discuss the project, our client selected the classic UV-lacquered engineered oak flooring. The brief was to install a floating floor system with sound-reducing underlay to minimise noise, ensuring a seamless finish across rooms, stairs, and hallways.

Client Expectations

Our client chose us for their Oak Plank Flooring Taunton project, aiming for a seamless, low-maintenance flooring solution had specific expectations for this project:

  1. A durable, low-maintenance flooring solution to replace the carpets.
  2. Seamless transitions across rooms and hallways, with no visible joins at doorways.
  3. Proper attention to detail on stair installations, including secure nosings and expansion joints.
  4. A clean, professional installation with careful removal and reinstallation of skirting boards.

They also emphasised the importance of sound reduction between floors and wanted a floating floor system with noise-cancelling underlay to meet this need.

Oak Plank Flooring Taunton Project Process

Preparation and Removal

Our oak plank flooring Taunton project began with the removal and disposal of the existing carpets throughout the house. Next, a noise-reducing underlay was installed, ensuring all joints were taped to provide a continuous barrier. The skirting boards were carefully removed, numbered for easy reinstallation, and set aside.

First Floor Installation

The UV Lacquered engineered oak flooring, chosen for this oak plank flooring Taunton project, featuring a tongue-and-groove design, was installed as a floating floor. Each plank was glued with wood bonding PVA adhesive for a secure, tight fit.

To ensure a seamless appearance, the flooring was installed room by room with no visible joins in doorways or hallways. The planks were staggered for visual appeal and structural integrity, and architraves and doors were undercut where necessary to allow the wood to slot neatly into place.

Staircase Installation

Staircases often present challenges in flooring projects, and this case was no exception. Each step was fully bonded with flexible adhesive, ensuring stability and durability. The nosings were glued and clamped securely to the treads, creating a seamless connection between the steps and the flooring.

Expansion gaps were left by the banisters to allow for natural movement of the wood. These gaps were filled with oak-coloured mastic to blend seamlessly with the flooring. This meticulous attention to detail ensured the staircase looked cohesive and flowed beautifully with the adjacent floors.

Ground Floor Installation

The second phase of our oak plank flooring Taunton project involved installing the flooring on the ground floor. The process mirrored the first floor, with the flooring flowing from the bottom stair riser into the hallway and two bedrooms. Each room, including built-in cupboard areas, was finished with precision.

Thanks to the newer construction of the home, the subfloor levels were excellent, making the installation process efficient. Once the underlay was in place, the boards locked together easily with adhesive, and progress moved quickly.

Finishing Touches

Once all the flooring was installed, the skirting boards were reattached using grab adhesive. Nails from the original installation were removed, and the tops of the skirting were caulked for a polished finish.

The final step involved thoroughly vacuuming and mopping the floors to remove any adhesive residue or dirt, leaving the space immaculate and ready to enjoy.

Oak floors can last 100 years or more with proper care. Their longevity depends on factors like installation quality, maintenance, and finish. With 4 Seasons Flooring’s expert services, you can ensure your oak floors stand the test of time.

The best type of oak flooring depends on your needs:

  • Solid Oak Flooring: Ideal for traditional aesthetics and longevity, perfect for areas without moisture concerns.
  • Engineered Oak Flooring: Great for durability and stability, especially in areas with changing humidity or underfloor heating.

While oak flooring is durable and beautiful, it does have a few disadvantages:

  • Cost: Oak can be more expensive than some other flooring materials.
  • Moisture Sensitivity: Solid oak can warp in high humidity or if not properly sealed.
  • Scratches: Though durable, oak can scratch under heavy furniture or sharp objects without protective pads.

Oak flooring thickness depends on the type:

  • Solid Oak Flooring: Typically 18-22mm thick for durability and multiple refinishing options.
  • Engineered Oak Flooring: Usually 14-20mm thick, with a 3-6mm wear layer for stability and longevity.
