Oak Herringbone Supply Wellington: Flooring Installation and Finishing

Oak Herringbone Supply Wellington Project Brief

This oak herringbone supply Wellington project involved the supply, installation, and finishing of 28sqm of solid prime-grade oak herringbone flooring across a main room and hallway. The existing carpet and skirting boards were removed to create a clean slate for the new flooring.

Our client wanted a fully bonded herringbone floor with a two-block border and an entrance mat, finished with a high-quality hard wax oil. The goal was to achieve a timeless, elegant look while ensuring the durability and longevity of the flooring.

Oak Herringbone Supply Wellington Client Expectations

Our client expectations for the project:

  1. Precision Installation – The herringbone pattern needed to be perfectly aligned for a seamless look.
  2. Durability and Stability – The flooring had to be fully bonded to ensure long-term stability and resilience.
  3. Smooth and Uniform Finish – A professional sanding and finishing process to highlight the beauty of the oak grain.
  4. Efficient Completion – The work needed to be completed within a short timeframe with minimal disruption.

Oak Herringbone Supply Wellington – Installation Process

Preparation and Flooring Layout

One of the challenges in older properties is that the walls are rarely perfectly straight. In this case, starting the herringbone pattern from the center of the room would not have worked. Instead, the first row was carefully aligned at the entrance to the kitchen, ensuring that the pattern looked visually square as you looked down the hallway.

The first line of blocks was glued down with sufficient weight to hold them in place, preventing movement as the rest of the pattern was laid. Once this initial section was set, the herringbone body was installed quickly and efficiently.

Border and Detailing

The border installation required precision, especially in tight areas around radiator pipes and uneven walls. Cutting the border to fit these sections took time, but it was essential to achieving a seamless and professional result. Once all flooring was in place, the adhesive was left to fully cure overnight before sanding began.

Oak Herringbone Supply Wellington – Sanding and Finishing Process

Initial Sanding and Filling

Since the oak herringbone blocks were unfinished, the sanding process was relatively straightforward. The floor was first sanded using an 80-grit belt sander to ensure a smooth and level surface, followed by edge sanding to maintain consistency along the borders.

To fill any small gaps between the blocks, a resin and sawdust mix was applied across the entire floor twice. This method ensures a seamless look while reinforcing the durability of the installation.

Fine Sanding and Detailing

The entire floor was then sanded again with a 120-grit pass on both the sander and edger. For additional precision, a palm sander was used along the border and in tricky areas to ensure complete uniformity. Finally, a flexi sanding pass with 100 and 120-grit was done to refine the surface before finishing.

Hard Wax Oil Application

To enhance the natural beauty of the solid oak herringbone flooring, our client opted for Osmo Silk Hard Wax Oil in a silk-matt finish.

  • First Coat: The first layer of hard wax oil was applied with a trowel, ensuring deep penetration into the wood for maximum protection. Excess oil was buffed off by hand to create a smooth, even base.
  • Final Coat: Once the first coat had dried, a second coat was applied with a roller, carefully ensuring full coverage, especially around the edges. This final coat provided enhanced durability and a uniform finish, highlighting the warm tones and natural grain of the oak.

The completed oak herringbone supply Wellington project was a stunning transformation, delivering a classic and timeless look. The intricate herringbone pattern, framed by a perfectly fitted two-block border, created a seamless and elegant aesthetic.

The Osmo Silk Hard Wax Oil finish gave the oak flooring a rich, natural sheen while providing long-lasting protection against wear and tear. The floor was now durable, easy to maintain, and visually striking, making it a standout feature in our client’s home.
