Oak Herringbone Sanding Taunton: Restoring Character to an Aged Floor

Oak Herringbone Sanding Taunton Project Brief

This oak herringbone sanding Taunton project involved the restoration of a heavily worn, uneven floor in an old cottage. The task required sanding, filling, repairs, and applying a protective hard wax oil finish to revive the beauty of the original oak flooring. Years of dirt accumulation and an uneven subfloor had left the floor in poor condition, with a dull brown appearance that the client wanted transformed into a smooth, naturally light finish.

Oak Herringbone Sanding Taunton Client Expectations

Our client had several specific expectations for this project:

  • Restore the floor to a smooth and level surface while maintaining its original character.
  • Eliminate the dark, aged appearance and bring out the natural beauty of the oak.
  • Secure any loose blocks to ensure a solid and stable floor.
  • Fill gaps and imperfections with a high-quality resin mix for a seamless look.
  • Apply a durable, protective finish that enhances the wood grain and makes maintenance easier.

Oak Herringbone Sanding Taunton Process

Initial Sanding and Repairs

The process began with an initial 40-grit sanding pass to assess the extent of damage and determine which herringbone blocks required repairs. Several loose blocks were identified, carefully removed, and cleaned to ensure proper adhesion when reinstalled.

  • The subfloor was cleaned thoroughly before re-gluing and securing the loose blocks.

  • These were left to dry overnight to ensure they bonded securely before the next sanding phase.

Filling and Smoothing the Surface

Once the floor was stable, a resin and sawdust mix was applied across the entire surface to fill in any small gaps and imperfections. This was done in two passes:

  • First application: Spread evenly with a trowel to fill minor cracks.

  • Second application: Ensured a completely smooth, uniform surface after the initial coat had dried.

After allowing the resin to set, the floor was sanded down progressively to a 120-grit finish on both the main body and edges.

Addressing Level Issues

One of the biggest challenges in this restoration was the uneven subfloor. The cottage’s old concrete base had shifted over time, leading to an uneven surface where the herringbone blocks mirrored the high and low points.

To counter this, a slow flexi-sand pass was performed using a machine with four flexible sanding pads that adjusted to the natural contours of the floor. This approach prevented burn marks on high spots and ensured a uniform, well-balanced finish.

Applying the Hard Wax Oil Finish

With the floor fully prepared, it was thoroughly hoovered to remove all residual dust before applying the first coat of hard wax oil.

  • The oil was applied with a blade across the floor, carefully working it into the grain.

  • Excess oil was buffed off by hand, ensuring no residue was left behind in low spots.

  • Our client was fascinated by the transformation, watching as the natural golden hues of the oak reappeared.

After the first coat had dried, time was allowed for the surface to fully absorb the oil before applying the final coat.

Final Finishing Touches

The second coat of hard wax oil was applied with a microfibre roller, ensuring even coverage. A fine brush was used to reach into corners and edges, providing a flawless finish.

Because the floor was particularly old and dry, the first coat had absorbed unevenly, making the second application essential for achieving a smooth, rich finish.

The oak herringbone floor was completely transformed, with a smooth, even texture and a stunning natural finish. The deep brown discoloration was replaced with warm golden tones, highlighting the intricate grain of the wood. The restored surface was now:

  • Level and free of loose blocks for a secure, stable feel underfoot.

  • Smooth and polished, with no visible cracks or gaps.

  • Durable and easy to maintain, thanks to the protective wax oil finish.

Client Testimonial

James did a superb job renovating the parquet floor in the house we bought in the last couple of years. Probably 100 years old or more, it was certainly in need of attention. Our daughter popped in to see the outcome – she was amazed “Wow – I thought it would be good. I didn’t expect it to be this good”. Many thanks James – we would wholeheartedly recommend you.
