Oak Floor Sanding Porlock Project Brief
This oak floor sanding Porlock project came about after a neighbour of a previous client noticed the transformation of their wooden floors. Seeing the impressive results firsthand, they decided to have their own solid oak flooring restored.
The floor had suffered from years of wear, with the finish gradually deteriorating despite regular cleaning and polishing efforts.
The goal was to completely remove the old finish, sand the floor back to its natural beauty, and apply a durable protective coating to ensure longevity.
Oak Floor Sanding Porlock Client Expectations
Our client wanted a flawless and uniform finish that would:
Restore the natural beauty of the oak flooring.
Remove all signs of wear, scratches, and dullness.
Ensure a durable and easy-to-maintain finish.
Provide protection against future spills and daily foot traffic.
Blend seamlessly with the existing character of their home.
Oak Floor Sanding Porlock Process
Sanding the Floor
The sanding process started with an 80-grit pass using the Hummel floor sander and an edger to gradually strip away the old, worn-out finish. As layers of dirt and polish were removed, the beautiful grain of the solid oak flooring emerged.
The sanding process was straightforward, with no unexpected challenges, making it an efficient restoration.
Once the initial sanding was complete, the floor underwent progressive sanding stages with 120-grit sandpaper to smooth out any roughness. Special attention was given to the edges to ensure an even surface throughout. After completing the main sanding, a flexisand pass was done to blend the floor seamlessly and prepare it for finishing.
Applying the Hard Wax Oil Finish
For this project, our client chose a hard wax oil finish, known for its durability and ability to enhance the natural beauty of oak flooring. The application process was methodical:
The first coat was applied with a blade, ensuring an even distribution of oil while wiping off excess product as it was worked in.
Two boards were treated at a time, allowing for precise control over the finish.
After the initial coat had time to absorb, a second coat was applied using a roller, leaving a thicker protective layer that would guard against future spills and wear.
Due to the limited heating efficiency in the cottage, the drying process would take longer than usual. However, since the kitchen area had minimal furniture, there were no concerns about moving heavy items back onto the freshly treated floor too soon.
Oak Floor Sanding Porlock Final Result
The oak floor sanding Porlock project resulted in a beautifully restored and uniform finish, meeting our client’s expectations perfectly.
The natural grain of the oak was revitalised, providing a stunning visual appeal while ensuring durability.
The final finish not only looked fantastic but also promised easier maintenance in the years ahead and the protective coat of hard wax oil offered excellent resistance to wear, ensuring the floor would withstand daily use while maintaining its elegance.

Client Testimonial
James was extremely pleasant. The sanding process was straightforward James uses several different size sanders & all the dust is collected. Then two finish coats applied which were allowed to dry for 12 hours prior to walking on it. We are very pleased with the result.
