Floor Sanding Wincanton Project Brief
This floor sanding Wincanton project involved restoring 80sqm of solid oak flooring across a kitchen, hallway, and front room. Over time, the flooring had become discoloured and dirty, losing its original charm. Our client found it increasingly difficult to clean and desired a natural, durable finish that would rejuvenate the space.
The goal was to restore the flooring’s natural beauty with a hard wax oil finish, ensuring a smooth, durable surface that would be easy to maintain.
Floor Sanding Wincanton Client Expectations
Our client’s expectations for this project included:
- Removing ingrained dirt, discolouration, and the worn finish from the solid oak flooring.
- Restoring the wood’s natural colour and grain for a fresh, clean look.
- Applying a durable, low-maintenance finish to protect the flooring from future wear and tear.
- Completing the work efficiently with minimal disruption to the household.
Floor Sanding Wincanton Process
Kitchen Sanding
The restoration began in the kitchen, where the floor was heavily soiled with cooking oils and grime. Using a Hummel sander, we started with 40-grit sandpaper to remove the dirt and old finish. Progressing through grits to 120, we achieved a smooth, clean surface.
To access the edges and corners, all kickboards and cabinet doors were removed. The edges in the kitchen were particularly challenging due to the buildup of cooking oils, which clogged the sandpaper. After persistent effort and frequent changes of sanding paper, the kitchen was fully prepared, including a 120-grit flexi sanding pass.
Hallway and Steps
The next phase focused on the hallway and steps, which were tight and awkward spaces unsuitable for the Hummel sander. These areas were sanded using an edger and a flexi sander, ensuring every corner and transition was smooth and consistent.
The steps, made from the same oak boards as the flooring, were carefully sanded to create a seamless transition between rooms. Once the hallway and steps were fully prepared, the focus shifted to the largest section of the project—the front room.
Front Room Sanding
The front room, the largest and most challenging area, posed additional difficulties. The floor was uneven in many places, requiring adjustments to the edger’s wheels to avoid digging into the wood. After completing the main sanding passes with 40, 80, and 120-grit papers, the room was edged and flexi sanded to ensure a uniform finish across the entire surface.
Corners were meticulously restored by scraping off the old finish and using a Festool corner machine, which made quick work of the intricate areas.
Hard Wax Oil Application
After completing the sanding process, the entire floor was hoovered to remove all dust and debris. The first coat of hard wax oil was applied late in the day using a roller instead of the usual blade-and-buff method. This ensured a smooth, even application across all boards.
The next morning, due to the house’s cold temperature, the first coat had dried slightly tacky. Nevertheless, it was dry enough to allow for the application of a top coat. This second coat was applied methodically with a roller, board by board, ensuring the finish was not too thick and was evenly distributed.
Floor Sanding Wincanton Final Result
The restored oak floors were a stunning transformation. The natural hard wax oil finish brought out the rich grain and natural beauty of the wood, creating a fresh, clean look throughout the kitchen, hallway, and front room.
The once dark and dirty flooring now had a light, smooth, and uniform appearance, making the space feel brighter and more inviting. The durable finish not only protected the wood but also ensured it would be easier to maintain for years to come.
