Floor Sanding Weston-Super-Mare: Restoring a Beautiful Pine Floor

Floor Sanding Weston-Super-Mare Project Brief

This floor sanding Weston-Super-Mare project involved restoring a well-used pine floor in a residential property. Our client had recently removed the carpets and wanted to bring the original floorboards back to life with professional sanding and finishing.

The job covered a large living room, requiring a two-stage process due to a large sofa that could not be removed entirely from the space. Additionally, the floor had been previously sanded, meaning that while it was relatively level, it required gap filling, board repairs, and a high-quality finish to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal.

Our client wanted a practical yet visually stunning result, making the floor easy to maintain while preserving its natural character.

Floor Sanding Weston-Super-Mare Client Expectations

Our client had a clear vision for their floor restoration:

  1. Remove signs of wear and tear while maintaining the floor’s character.
  2. Secure and repair damaged boards by filling gaps and addressing any splits.
  3. Achieve a smooth and uniform surface through expert sanding.
  4. Apply a protective finish that would enhance the wood’s natural beauty while ensuring longevity.
  5. Minimise disruption while completing the job efficiently over two days.

Floor Sanding Weston-Super-Mare Process

Preparation and Initial Repairs

Before sanding could begin, gap filling and board repairs were necessary. The process started with:

  • Pine fillets and expanding adhesive being inserted into the gaps to stabilise the floor and reduce drafts.
  • Glueing and clamping split boards to restore their strength.
  • Nailing down loose boards to prevent movement.
  • Cutting off excess fillets with a multi-tool and bagging up all offcuts to maintain a clean workspace.

Once the structural repairs were completed, the first section of the room was cleared for sanding, while the large sofa was left in place on the opposite side.

Sanding Process

The initial sanding began with a 40-grit pass, which helped to level the floor and remove surface imperfections. As the sanding progressed to 80-grit, the grain of the pine started to emerge beautifully.

Our client visited the room while the sanding was underway and was already thrilled with how the transformation was beginning. Their enthusiastic reaction reinforced the impact that professional sanding has in bringing floors back to life.

Filling and Refining the Surface

To create a flawless and uniform finish, the floor was then filled using a sawdust and resin mix. This process helped to:

  • Fill any small gaps and imperfections in the grain.
  • Ensure a consistent texture throughout the floor.

After the filling process, a final 120-grit sanding pass was done on both the main surface and edges, ensuring a smooth and refined finish.

Applying the Lacquer Finish

With the sanding completed, the floor was:

  • Thoroughly hoovered to remove any remaining dust.
  • Sealed with three coats of matt lacquer, enhancing the natural beauty of the pine while providing excellent protection.
  • Lightly abraded between coats to ensure proper adhesion and a smooth finish.

The lacquer was left to dry overnight, and the sofa was carefully moved onto the newly treated floor to allow work on the second half of the room.

Second-Day Sanding and Finishing

The next day, the same process was repeated for the remaining half of the floor. Special care was taken to:

  • Protect the newly lacquered section while working on the second half.
  • Ensure even sanding and finishing for a seamless look.
  • Pay extra attention to areas around the fireplace, as detailed sanding was needed in these delicate sections.

By the end of the second day, the final coats of matt lacquer were applied, leaving the entire floor restored, protected, and visually stunning.
