Floor Sanding Nailsea: Restoring an Elegant Oak Herringbone Floor

Floor Sanding Nailsea Project Brief

This floor sanding Nailsea project involved the restoration of a beautiful oak herringbone floor in a living room. The flooring had seen better days, with its original finish completely faded, allowing dirt and grime to become embedded in the surface. Additionally, the herringbone pattern exhibited multiple gaps, likely caused by fluctuations in temperature and humidity before the new owner took possession of the property.

The objective was to restore the oak herringbone floor to its former glory by sanding, filling gaps, and applying a high-quality hard wax oil finish for durability and aesthetics.

Floor Sanding Nailsea Client Expectations

Our client had several key expectations for this project:

  1. Level and smooth the flooring while maintaining the integrity of the herringbone pattern.

  2. Eliminate dirt buildup and faded patches to create a uniform appearance.

  3. Fill the gaps between blocks to prevent movement and improve insulation.

  4. Apply a premium finish that enhances the wood’s natural beauty and protects it from wear.

  5. Ensure minimal disruption and a quick drying time so they could enjoy their newly restored floor as soon as possible.

Floor Sanding Nailsea Process

Sanding the Floor

The first step was to sand the entire floor using a Hummel floor sander and an edger.

  • A 40-grit pass was used initially to remove the worn-out finish and level any uneven blocks.

  • A progressive 80-grit pass smoothed the surface further, preparing it for the filling stage.

  • Special care was taken with the herringbone pattern to ensure the sanding direction preserved the original aesthetic.

Filling the Gaps

The next step was to fill the gaps between the herringbone blocks.

  • The sawdust collected from the edger (which is finer than the dust from the Hummel) was mixed with resin to create a colour-matched filling paste.

  • This fast-drying resin filler set within two minutes, creating a rock-hard bond that ensured stability in the floor.

  • A second application of the resin filler was completed to ensure every gap was sealed before moving on to fine sanding.

Final Sanding and Surface Preparation

Once the resin had fully set, the floor was sanded with 120-grit paper on both the Hummel and edger, creating an ultra-smooth finish.

  • All corners and hard-to-reach areas were carefully sanded by hand to maintain consistency.

  • The floor was then flexi-sanded with 100 and 120-grit pads to remove any remaining sanding marks, ensuring a flawless surface.

  • A thorough hoover was performed to eliminate all traces of dust before applying the finish.

Applying the Hard Wax Oil Finish

For this project, a premium hard wax oil was chosen to enhance the grain of the oak and provide long-term durability.

  • The first coat was applied using a roller, ensuring even coverage while allowing deeper penetration into the wood.

  • Any excess oil was carefully burnished off to prevent pooling and ensure a smooth finish.

  • After the initial coat dried, the final topcoat of premium matt hard wax oil was applied, bringing out the natural warmth of the oak while offering robust protection against spills and daily wear.

Client Testimonial

James did an amazing job on our old and weathered oak parquet – it looks like a completely different floor now! He was even able to replace a couple of missing blocks with reclaimed timber to fill in a couple of strange gaps we had.

James was great to deal with – very polite and professional. His communication was brilliant, and he has extended his time on the job so as not to rush through it. Obviously takes pride in his work and I can’t recommend him highly enough.
