Floor Sanding Fishponds Bristol Project Brief
This floor sanding Fishponds Bristol project involved restoring a 30sqm oak floor in a living and dining area. Our clients had previously refurbished the floor themselves and had done a good job, but at the time, they had chosen to paint the floor black. Now, years later, as they renovated their home, the black floor no longer suited their vision, and they wanted to restore the natural beauty of the oak.
The goal was to completely remove the black paint, sand the floor to a smooth, even finish, and apply a hard wax oil for durability and aesthetic appeal.
Floor Sanding Fishponds Bristol Client Expectations
Our clients had clear expectations for the project:
- Remove all traces of black paint to reveal the natural oak beneath.
- Achieve a smooth, even surface that would enhance the grain and knots of the wood.
- Apply a protective finish that would not only look beautiful but also be durable and easy to maintain.
- Complete the project within a single day so they could move their furniture back in as soon as possible.
Floor Sanding Fishponds Bristol Process
Initial Sanding Challenges
At first glance, the project seemed like a straightforward sanding job. However, as soon as the Hummel floor sander was started with a 60-grit sanding belt, it quickly became apparent that the black paint was extremely stubborn. The sandpaper was blunted within minutes, requiring an adjustment in approach.
To tackle the problem, 40-grit coarse sandpaper was used instead. Even then, multiple belts were needed to cut through the paint effectively. By the end of the morning, the floor had been sanded using 40, 80, and 120-grit passes to ensure the surface was smooth and even.
Edge and Corner Sanding
Once the main floor was sanded, the focus shifted to edges and corners, which required a more detailed approach. The edging sander and corner tools were used to remove the last traces of black paint and ensure a consistent finish across the entire floor. This detailed work took up most of the afternoon, but by 4 PM, the floor was fully prepared for finishing.
Applying the Hard Wax Oil
With the sanding complete, a final pass with a flexi sander at 120-grit was done to refine the surface before applying the finish.
Our client was eager to have the project completed within the day so they could move their furniture back in. After discussing options, it was agreed that working late to apply the oil and topcoat would be the best solution.
After a much-needed coffee break, the floor was hoovered thoroughly to remove all dust before applying the first coat of hard wax oil. The oil was applied with a blade, then buffed in by hand using a rag, working two boards at a time to ensure even absorption and a dry, uniform finish.
Final Coat and Completion
By 6 PM, the final coat of oil was applied using a roller, creating a thicker protective layer that would enhance durability while leaving a beautiful, even appearance. The transformation was remarkable—the black paint was completely gone, and the natural grain and knots of the oak were once again the highlight of the room.
