Antique Oak Supply and Fit: Transforming a Taunton Home with Timeless Flooring

Antique Oak Supply and Fit Project Brief

This antique oak supply and fit project took place in a beautiful period home in Taunton. The homeowners wanted to replace their old carpets and underlay with a flooring option that added warmth, character, and longevity to the space. While their existing pine floorboards could have been sanded and restored, they preferred a new wooden floor that brought instant charm and durability.

After reviewing several samples, our client chose an antique oak supply and fit option. The warm brown tones of the antique oak complemented the traditional style of their home, offering a seamless blend of classic aesthetics and modern quality. Our task was to prepare the subfloor, supply and fit the antique oak flooring, and deliver an exceptional finish.

Client Expectations

Our clients were looking for an elegant, long-term flooring solution that would:

  • Replace the outdated carpet and underlay.
  • Elevate the look and feel of their large living space.
  • Provide a warm, authentic wood tone with a traditional yet timeless appeal.
  • Be fitted with precision, ensuring a flawless finish that enhanced the room’s period features.

They also requested the antique oak supply and fit process to be carried out with minimal disruption to the rest of the house, as they planned to renovate additional rooms later.

Antique Oak Supply and Fit Process

The antique oak supply and fit process for this Taunton home was carefully planned and executed over three days.

Day One: Preparation and Subfloor Installation

The project began with removing the old carpet and underlay. Beneath these, we found pine floorboards, which we could have restored. However, our client opted for a brand-new antique oak, so we prepped the subfloor accordingly.

  • We installed a 5mm plywood deck over the pine floorboards. This provided a stable, level surface for the antique oak flooring.
  • We chose to nail the plywood rather than glue it, preserving the possibility for future homeowners to remove the oak flooring without damaging the original boards beneath.
  • Once the plywood was secure, we undercut the skirting boards by 20mm to accommodate the thickness of the new oak flooring.
  • The original skirting, nailed into brickwork at a 45-degree angle, presented a challenge. The nails dulled several saw blades, requiring extra time and care to achieve a clean undercut.
  • Finally, we removed the doors to ensure they could be trimmed and rehung later to fit over the new floor height.

Day Two: Starting the Antique Oak Flooring Installation

We started laying the antique oak boards on the second day.

  • Gluing began at the entrance doorway to ensure the floor was perfectly straight from the first reference point.
  • The first row is always critical, and we took the time to measure carefully, draw pencil guide lines, and ensure tight joins. After securing the first row, we left it to harden for a few hours.
  • Once set, it provided a solid base to continue the antique oak supply and fit, laying more boards with precision and knocking them into place for a seamless finish.
  • These were fixed-length 1.9m boards, requiring extra attention to stagger the joins and avoid a repetitive, “lined-up” appearance. Our client wanted uniformity without the randomness of variable-length boards, making it important to maintain consistency across rows.

By the end of the second day, we had completed about half of the room.

Day Three: Completing the Installation

On the final day, we focused on the remaining flooring and the finishing touches.

  • We carefully cut the boards to fit around the fireplace and along the walls.
  • The last row of boards was precisely trimmed to fit snugly under the skirting, locking into place smoothly.
  • Once the flooring was complete, we rehung the doors and installed a door bar at the entrance for a flush, polished transition between rooms.
